Bolton Street Memorial Park and the Seddon Memorial

This historic cemetery served colonial Wellington for fifty years until it was closed in 1892. The Park is a heritage rose site of national importance.

Bolton Street Memorial Chapel is open 10am-4pm daily and contains information on burials and a permanent history display. The chapel is a replica of the original Anglican mortuary chapel which was based on a design by Frederick Thatcher for a country church. The Sexton's Cottage (1857) is one of the oldest buildings in Wellington and serves as a home for an artist in residence.

The cemetery gained heritage status after it was bisected by the Wellington Urban Motorway. Some interesting graves remain within.

Te Araroa "New Zealand's Trail' passes though the Memorial Park. As part of a club project supporting the Walkway the Wellington North Rotary Club has planted 18 Holm oak trees in a grove near the Bowen Street entrance

Walk over the bridge across the Motorway and where the cemetery borders on Anderson Park you will find a memorial to New Zealand's most dominant Prime Minister, Richard John Seddon.
