Lady Norwood Rose Garden

Wellington City Gardens

Set in formation around a circular fountain, the Lady Norwood rose garden hosts more than 3000 roses of 300 rose varieties in 110 beds. Framing the perimeter of the garden are patio and climbing roses. It is set in the lower part of the extensive Wellington Botanic Gardens, and was first formed in 1950, following massive earthworks to fill in the former Andersons Gully.

Botanists use the Integrated Pest Management system of monitoring and control to maintain the garden, using limited chemicals and natural predators like ladybirds. There is also a continuous trial bed where new rose varieties are tested.

The garden and fountain gained their name after a donation by Lady Norwood to the formation of the garden, and a later top up by her children.

Refreshment is available at the popular café ‘Picnic’ adjoining the Begonia house which was built in 1960 next to the Lady Norwood Garden. The best time of the year to see the roses in bloom is from November to April.
