Also known as Space Place, this where you go to view the night sky through a telescope or at a planetarium. A recent refurbishment has added a multimedia exhibition all about the Southern Skies.
William Gray Young was the architect for the Observatory which was built in 1940/41.
Open 7 days a week from 10am until 5pm, with late night stargazing every Saturday (weather-permitting!). They have good holiday programmes. See the website for stargazing times. There is an entrance fee. The Dominion Observatory complex is also near here.
In 1943 Colin McCahon made the observatory the subject of two watercolour paintings.
TRANSPORT: Use the Cable Car from Lambton Quay or you can park for up to two hours in the park next to the Skyline Restaurant at the end of Upland Rd.
