New Zealand's expertise with geothermal power started at Wairakei. The first geothermal power station in the world to harness wet steam. The borefield where the steam comes to the surface is worth a look. The station is now much more visible with the new diversion of State Highway One (SH1) which crosses the Waikato River just upstream of the Power Station.
