20 Stout Street, Whataupoko, Gisborne
Tairawhiti museum is a great provincial museum featuring a very well curated collection related to local history including clear explanations of the significance of the artefacts. The front of the museum on the river is the wheelhouse of a ship which went down in Gisborne and walking through it provides a captain's cabin and its associated areas. The Star of Canada is a most unusual part of a museum. Also within the museum is the Jack Richards collection of decorative art including a significant collection of Lalique glass. The art gallery features local artists and has new shows frequently.
The C company memorial house is a large simple room on whose walls are the photographs of those who served with C company of the 28th Maori battalion. On one wall are photographs of all the many marae from the East Coast that the men and women came from.
Inside the door is a quotation from Sir Apirana Ngata under the title The price of citizenship, 'We will lose some of the most promising of our young leaders but we will gain the respect of our Pakeha brothers.'
