Between 1890 and 1940 Caversham was New Zealand's oldest and most densely populated working class community. The significant societal change which occurred over this period has been captured in the 'Caversham Project' of the University of Otago. The experience of the city's southern suburbs during this period of urbanisation and industrialisation is considered to be a microcosm of what was happening across the country. The study has given rise to a number of books.
