15 Lisburn Avenue, Caversham, Caversham, Dunedin City
Lisburn House was the 'townhouse', built in 1964 for for the successful Fulton farming family of West Taieri. A landmark in interesting but modest Caversham, it can also now be seen from the motorway.
Interesting for it's very steeply gabled roof, polychromatic brickwork and multiple rooflines, it was the work of early Dunedin Architect William Henry Clayton. Most of his Dunedin buildings have now met their end, but he had been later elevated to New Zealand's first Colonial Architect, and designed the Government Buildings in Wellington, amongst a plethora of other works.
The Fulton townhouse survived by becoming swallowed up in the suburb of Caversham, used as a private residence, and then converting to bed and breakfast purposes.
Although there is a town named Lisburn in England, the Fultons hailed from Ireland and Lisburn was the name of the farm or village there. Click below to secure accommodation in Lisburn House, which now operates as a Luxury Hotel and restaurant.
