24 Cuba Street, Te Aro, Wellington City

The Philanthropist's Stone

Thomas George Macarthy, a Londoner, came to New Zealand to make a fortune on the gold fields. He turned to brewing and in Wellington had breweries in Bond and then Tory Streets. Having no children, he established a charitable trust which has now celebrated 100 years of existence and benefited many Wellington causes. To commemorate this, the Macarthy Trust together with the Wellington Sculpture Trust commissioned Scott Eady for this work sitting on a Corinthian column.
