136 Dixon Street, Te Aro, Wellington City
The Dixon Street Flats were completed in 1944 as part of the first Labour Government's state housing programme. They are considered to be the archetype of Modernist apartment blocks in New Zealand. Residents like living here, suggesting the project has been successful.
There is some doubt about responsibility for the design - the Government Housing Department's chief architect was Gordon Wilson but Ernst Plischke probably played a major role in the design.
