Aratiatia is the first hydro station and smallest hydro reservoir on the Waikato River.
Aratiatia is famous for its rapids. The generators are starved of water twice a day and the water diverted so that visitors can see the full flow of the river over the original falls. If you are travelling on theWaikato Hydro Scenic route you may wish to time your journey to be at the rapids when this occurs at 10am and 2.30pm.
