Wairakei Thermal Valley

The reason Maori, then Pakeha, and then tourists fell in love this area is still the same, thermal resources. Up this pretty little valley, all the hot stuff is evident in abundance, accessible and fun too, at the quirky Wairakei Thermal Valley camp.

There is a short informative bushwalk (small charge) where the visitor can see fumaroles and other thermal features in a genuine bush environment as well as learning from panels about the heritage as well as the geology of the area.

The camp itself is of the slightly organic variety, a mix of cabin, caravan and tent sites, even a teepee, sometimes staffed by Wwoofers and well populated by healthy chooks. The main lodge is a haven of offbeat hospitality, complete with bar facilities and a jokey old time kiwi character for a host. Decorated with eclectic souvenirs from the host's extensive travels, there are often surprises in store for visitors, as well as tea and cake.
