12863 West Coast Road, Springfield-Arthur's Pass, Selwyn
Even if you don’t go in, you might like to stop and look at the Moa. A former proprietor of the pub, Paddy Freaney, made national news when he claimed an encounter with one of these giant extinct birds, now there are several sculptures in the garden. Mr Freaney is long gone but his son Liam is making a name for himself after several claims of UFO encounters.
The building is a newer one, but the Bealey Hotel has been an institution here since the 1860s.
