73 Dee Street, Invercargill, Other

The Langlands

A century after Central Invercargill's boom raised buildings and expectations on the Dee and Don Street Corner, the city's Licencing Trust is looking to see them and raise them a couple of stories.

Their grand six storey contemporary hotel will be the tallest building in the city when complete, and comes with an ambition to contribute in a big way to rejuvenation of the area. The design, by Queenstown based Warren and Mahoney, also incororates lower level features like retail and a covered laneway, which will house the Licencing Trust's first foray into cafe culture. It was announced in 2017 as the trust applied to Council to demolish the tired Victorian building they own on the corner and secured ownership of another building up Don Street.

Because of the sheer scale of the new build, it is planned to provide a contrast to nearby heritage features like the Grand Hotel, Alexandra Buildings, and two blocks away; the three heritage banks and Troopers Memorial, all of which date to the first Invercargill boom. Completion of project was delayed until 2020 in 2020 thanks to interruptions due to Covid-19.
