4 Gorton Street, Waikaka, Gore

Creamoata Factory

For older New Zealanders this is a piece of history. ‘Sergeant Dan the Creamoata man’ was for many years a well known advertising image. Creamoata, a pre-cooked porridge, was introduced by Flemings of Gore in 1920 and this is where it was made. Flemings was bought by Goodman Fielder in 2006 and the factory was closed. The building, now used to manufacture stock food, continues to be a Gore landmark. For a discussion of the architectural styles see the Historic Places entry.
