313D Anakiwa Road, Anakiwa, Marlborough

Anakiwa

Anakiwa is five kilometres north of Picton on Queen Charlotte Drive.

It is the home of the Outward Bound School which runs challenging outdoor education courses. Anakiwa is also the beginning (or end) of the Queen Charlotte Walkway.

The first section of the walkway, Te Mahia Saddle/Mistletoe Bay, is through attractive native bush and makes a pleasant day walk. At certain times of the year mountain bikers are allowed access to the track, too. It takes 4 hours one way, you can arrange boat transport to Mistletoe Bay and walk back to Anakiwa. For a half-day walk in and out, start at Anakiwa and go as far as Umungata (Davies Bay). This section of the track follows old bridle paths.

Starting from Anakiwa, you walk through mature beech forest for about an hour. After Umungata (safe beach, barbecue facilities, toilets), the track becomes more undulating, taking you through regenerating forest. From the Te Mahia Saddle, you can drop down to either Mistletoe Bay (picnic spot, barbecue, toilets) or Te Mahia Bay (motels with shop).
