Kaipupu Point Wildlife Sanctuary

Marlborough Community Halls

Following the Karori model, the Picton community is establishing a 'mainland island' isolated by a predator proof fence on a nearby peninsula in Queen Charlotte Sound.
The only access is by water. From the landing jetty in Dolphin Bay a graded track winds through the bush around the headland providing views of the Sounds.
The project aims to restore an indigenous Marlborough Sounds wildlife sanctuary in which the natural ecosystems and native flora and fauna flourish in a predator-free environment.

An inspiration is the 'dawn chorus' famously recorded when Captain James Cook visited the Sounds. Joseph Banks was "awakened by the singing of the birds ashore, from whence we are distant not a quarter of a mile. Their numbers were certainly very great. They seemed to strain their throats with emulation, and made, perhaps, the most melodious wild music I have ever heard, almost imitating small bells, but with the most tunable silver imaginable..."
