4149 Becks-Lauder Road, Becks, Central Otago
A small real place, and a real small place.
Becks is the proud and tiny town which only has two buildings and they are both hotels with the same name, The White Horse Hotel.
The reason for this is that the old hotel is so darn old (1864) it is good for a place on the Heritage Register, and the honour of a spot in the Inventory of Unreinforced Load Bearing Stone Masonry Buildings. The story goes that the first landlady Louisa Beck, then McMorran and then Fisher ran this place from 1865 until 1909, during that period burying three husbands, as well as her sister who also worked the hotel. The name of Beck stuck to the hotel.
Across the road and along a bit, is the new version of the same hotel, which took over trade in 1925 and is still going. Made of timber this time, it still has the authentic gold-town look about it. A handsome War Memorial Hall is here too.
Maybe there is more history to tell in little old Becks, if so, NZPlaces would like to know.
