1190 Fenton Street, Hiapo Summit-Rotorua, Rotorua
Community consultation, including the the local iwi (Te Arawa) was a feature of the design process for this dramatic building which is enclosed in a 84-meter-long screen or Maori Ceremonial cloak (Korowai). It is uniquely a Rotorua building.
Leuschke Group Architects worked with Vincent Chrisp Architects of Melbourne on the design. Maori artist Lyonel Grant designed the pattern for the laser cut, powder coated, aluminum Korowai. Another feature inspired by the Maori connection is the palisade-like vertical beams that guard the building.
The PRESSS system has been used in the construction so the building should survive major earthquakes.
