Manawa Karioi is an approximately 12-hectare ecological restoration project on the edge of the suburb of Paekawakawa / Island Bay associated with Tapu Te Ranga Marae. Land once covered with gorse, blackberry and grass is now largely covered with native bush due to the efforts of an incorporated society founded in 1990.
A little valley called Manawa Karioi which means 'My heart desires to linger' gives the project its name. The valley contains a spring which in 1907 became the water source for the Home of Compassion. A reservoir was needed and Mother Aubert famously involved the Governor General, Lord Plunket and his wife and a hundred schoolboys in its construction. The full story is told on an interpretation panel at the site.
Walking tracks through the reserve provide views of Island Bay including the Home of Compassion, Tapu Te Ranga Marae and across the valley, Erskine College.
Dogs may be walked in the reserve provided they are under control.
