Mona Vale

Christchurch City Gardens

In the last decade of the nineteenth century, Christchurch architect J.C. Maddison designed a large home using brick and half-timbering in a Tudor/Old English style for a city businessman and it was named Mona Vale. The huge grounds were progressively established into a grand garden of grand proportions.

It was later purchased by the daughter of a wealthy estate owner, who had a charming Gothic gatehouse built on Fendalton Road. The house and its fine gardens have been publicly owned since the 1960s. If you are keen, Mona Vale can be reached by a 40 minute walk across Hagley Park, otherwise take a bus.

A restaurant operates out of the main house and the estate is a popular venue for weddings. Damage caused by the earthquakes was restored and the building reopened in 2017.
