The visitor Centre overlooking the Avon River is a competition-winning design from Patterson Architects. It is for botanic research and visitor education and includes a reference library and herbarium as well as a function room and cafe named Ilex. Incredibly attractive ceilings, visitors may still feel like they are outdoors looking up at the trees. The symmetrical brick 1930s tea kiosk which used to provide refreshment in the gardens was a well loved but tired attraction before the earthquakes put an end to its days.
