An upgraded and upgraded again runway and terminal servicing not only domestic and international flights but a multitude of Fixed wing or helicopter scenic flights which take visitors around the region or as far as Milford Sound or Mount Cook.
This does not detract from the fact you are landing and taking off from an alpine airstrip with all the fun and excitement of close proximity to mountains, lakes and the other interesting conditions that may arise.
Air New Zealand and Jetstar provide the scheduled services. The Airport is about 7km from the town with buses and taxis available as transport.
The tourism boom of 2015 onwards has meant this state of the art facility is rather unsupported by infrastructure, although all the private facilities by way of shops and rental cars all nearby, the Council has let the town down by being slow to upgrade roading and parking. Unfortunately this means a rather rude arrival by way of long traffic queues in all directions upon leaving the airports, sweltering in summer conditions and freezing in winter.
Legendary Queenstowner Popeye Lucas wrote this book about his experiences as a pioneer aviator and a gentleman farmer in 20th Century of Queenstown.
Perhaps the most exciting aspect of Queenstown airport is the fact that so many adventures start here. Scenic flights, paragliding, heliskiing and other airborne adventures are often the highlight of a visit to Queenstown.
