Fox Glacier Hotel

Currently part of the Heartland Hotel group this is the historic resting place for this tourist town. Massive by any measure in country where most accommodation is shack-size and temporary, the Fox Glacier Hotel has been up and running since the 1920s. The Fox (Weheka) area was originally just farming country and the tourists (if any) used to visit the Franz Joseph Glacier until local farmers realised the potential gains from putting up a proper hotel. All locally milled and sawn, the big timber hotel faces north and can take up to 100 guests.
