194A Sydney Street West, Thorndon-Kelburn, Wellington City
Between 1955 and 1970 this cottage was the home of Rita Angus and many of her paintings are of the locality. An artist in residence scheme was recently revived with the support of Weltech.
Jill Trevelyan has written an excellent biography of Rita Angus.
Protests saved the cottage from demolition and in 1976, new zoning put in place by the Wellington City Council (the first in New Zealand) aimed to protect the special character of the Sydney Street West, Tinakori Road, and Hill Street area. The cottage is owned by the Thorndon Society.
