Thorndon is Wellington's oldest suburb, still with numerous examples of 19th century architecture and adjacent to the Government precinct. Take a walk among its streets. Thorndon provides an excellent example of how a location, which is by New Zealand standards densely populated, can provide a variety of living spaces in a harmonious environment.
The mid-nineteenth Century ambience of the suburb is preserved through a Design Guide This has served its purpose well. It is sometimes hard to tell which of the buildings is old and which is new.
Notable creatives who have lived here include Rita Angus and Douglas Lilburn.
Frances Hodgkins (1869 - 1947) spent most of her working life on Europe but between 1904 and 1906 she had a studio in Bowen Street.
Look closely on the main street and you will find a building named Isola Bella after the villa in Menton, France where Katherine Mansfield had a writing room.
You can also find the official residence of the Prime Minister Premier House
