Parliament Building Tour

Three buildings in sequence house New Zealand’s central government.

The oldest is the Victorian Gothic Parliamentary Library.

Between it and 'The Beehive', built in the second half of the twentieth century, is the partly built Edwardian Baroque building designed earlier in the century by John Campbell, now beautifully refurbished by Warren & Mahoney. While something of an architectural mish-mash, the group is a fascinating blending of several styles.

The refurbished parliament buildings can be visited on a free guided tour on most days of the year. Tours start on the hour, Monday to Friday - the first tour being at 10am and the last at 4pm. On Saturdays and public holidays the hours are 10am to 3pm while on Sundays they are 12 midday to 3 pm. There are no tours on Christmas and Boxing Days, on January 1 and 2 or on Waitangi Day and Good Friday. The visitor centre is in the ground floor foyer of the Beehive. The guided tour would be most suitable for 8 year olds and up. In the grounds there is a statue of New Zealand's most dominant Prime Minister, Richard John (King Dick) Seddon.
