Fort Ballance

Fort Ballance, a well preserved concrete structure dating from the Russian scare of 1885, can be reached by a track from above Scorching Bay or on a road from Mahanga Bay to the north. Fort Ballance was the premier fort in the Wellington area for 26 years (1885-1911). It provides an example of 19thC defence technology. The position offers great views to the south of Scorching Bay and the entrance to Wellington Harbour
