No film buff visiting Wellington will want to miss visiting the Weta Cave! Weta Workshop's mini-museum/shop is the most visit friendly part of the city's film industry.
For free, you can look at a range of models, including giant trolls from ‘The Hobbit’, weapons from ‘District Nine’, Gollum from ‘Lord of the Rings’ and the ape star of King Kong’. You can also watch a 20 minute showreel on the history and creative activities of Weta Workshop.
For those wanting more, Weta Cave runs a variety of paid behind-the-scenes a tour of the workshop. Tours range in time from 1 hour to a full day, and price from $28 to $189.
SCULPTING SCARS AND SCRAPES WORKSHOP
Weta Cave is open seven days a week, from 9am to 5:30pm. It is a five-minute drive from Wellington Airport and fifteen-minute drive from the CBD. To get there by bus, take the 18e bus to the corner of Darlington Road.
While you're in the area, you may want to check out more of the Miramar film scene, including walking past Stone Street Studios and Park Road Post (where more film magic happens) or catching a film or bite to eat at the Roxy Cinema.
