Te Papa is New Zealand's celebrated and sometimes controversial National Museum and Art Gallery. A Wellington "must visit". Fascinating for kids. Check out the way it was built to cope with earthquakes; you can actually see part of the underground structure. To make way for this museum a hotel was moved on a rail track and re-sited - a hundred metres along the road!!! Te Papa is pretty awesome to look at and inside are lots of things to view and some interactive stuff too.
Kids love the earthquake house. You can go inside and really feel what it is like to be in an earthquake. The museum has a very good outdoor area with fantastic views of the harbour and the city. This is a place for all the family. The shop is excellent for things NZ and there is a family friendly café too.
A new Te Taiao | Nature permanent exhibition zone celebrate Aotearoa New Zealand’s unique natural environment and considers its future protection. A centrepiece is the moa's egg found on the Wairau Bar.
A separate website - Arts Te Papa - features art exhibitions, events and an online art magazine. The building failed to find favour with many of the architectural community when completed but the public love it and in time architectural critics might see its merits too.
Te Papa was designed by JASMAX (Ivan Mercep, Peter Bossley and Pip Cheshire). It was completed in 1998.
Admission is free. There are sometimes special exhibitions which may have an admission fee.
