323 Mansfield Street, Berhampore, Wellington City
This park was set aside for recreational purposes in 1881 and used to be incorporated in Wellington Zoo.
It used to have a promenade, band rotunda, formal gardens and reservoir.
The government gathered troops here, along with their horses, before they were dispatched to the Boer War in 1900, and the wharfies of Wellington met here during the great strikes of 1912 and 1913.
Rugby was played here until it moved to Athletic Park and cycling, hockey and rugby league have all had a day here too.
Newtown Park has now found it's niche in hosting athletics and soccer. It is the home of Wellington United AFC, and the Wellington Phoenix.
It has a 400m all-weather running track.
The nearby Council Housing Block is home to hundreds of people and has become a bit of a posterchild for regeneration after a 2013 facelift.
