Berhampore State Flats - Centennial Flats

The first block of flats built by the Labour government in its housing programme is a fine example of 'modernism' applied to mass housing. The flats are spacious, built for the sun and all units above floor level have balconies. The complex included a central community space but this was converted into extra units. Design was by the Government Architect's office with completion occurring in 1938-9. (Gordon Wilson) (Long live the Modern p34)

In 2014 -15 the flats were refurbished with earthquake strengthening with the removal of floors, installation of steel beams and strengthening of walls with fibre-reinforced concrete. The refurbishment included new bathrooms, kitchens, security measures including CCTV cameras and fire alarms, insulation, interior paint, new flooring, exterior paint and roof repairs. The central hall was reinstated as a community space.

The Berhampore Flats, like the Dixon Street block were outliers in the State housing programme with the discerned preference of New Zealanders being a standalone dwelling in the suburbs.
