Hiruharama - Jerusalem

Wanganui Community Halls

By Caitlin Lynch

Hiruharama/Jerusalem is a small settlement on the Whanagnui river. It is home to Patiarero marae (Ngati Hau) and St. Joseph's Church, which was built in 1892. New Zealand's first Catholic order, Daughters of Our Lady of Compassion, was founded here in 1893 by Mother Suzanne Aubert. The process to nominate Suzanne Aubert for Canonisation is currently underway.

In 1969, famous poet James K Baxter moved to Jerusalem and established a commune. Inspired by the remote beauty of the place and the meeting of Catholicism and Maoritanga, he wrote three books while living here. Baxter died in 1972 and is buried here.

Baxter's commune is no longer, but the old Convent building is now self-catering accommodation. Affordable and peaceful, it's a great place to stay while exploring the Whanganui River.

The award-nominated 2012 documentary 'Film How Far is Heaven' explores the relationship between the dwindling order of the Sisters of Compassion and tangata whenua of Hiruharama. Local scenery, including the Convent, appear in the film.
