Tahunanui beach, accessible and beautiful, is geared towards the tourist trade. It offers a range of amusements, complete with miniature zoo, water park, go-carts, a number of popular bars and a 72-par golf course. A five minute drive from the heart of Nelson City, Tahunanui beach resides on the edge of the city’s busier suburbs. It’s very handy to the city’s motel district and airport.
Tahunanui has an historical link to Abel Tasman, the Dutch explorer who visited New Zealand in 1643. A monument to the explorer stands there.
Tasman didn’t come ashore, however; he and his crew were discouraged by threatening ‘natives’ and his discovery was discounted by his countrymen, who thought the country to be of little use. Another century would go by before the islands now called New Zealand were ‘rediscovered’ by Captain James Cook.
