Dannevirke, a town of 6,000 people is in the northern section of the area known in the 19th century as the "Seventy Mile Bush". The bush was cleared by European (mainly Scandinavian) settlers for pastoral farming. Many of the place and street names are distinctively Scandinavian and the square is named 'Copenhagen.'
