Coronation Library - Down by the Liffey Gallery

Lincoln had one of New Zealand's stable of 'tiny libraries', from 1911 until 1995 when the library moved down the road into Council premises.

The tiny library is 9m x 5m, and is on the site donated in 1873 as for a library, but the original building only lasted three years before it was moved across the (Liffey) river and became the Pioneer Hall. And it still is.

So the coronation library was planned in 1911, with the government giving out grants for community 'coronation' projects. But beauracracy got in the way of the application and accounts are that local MP, Heaton Rhodes, who was something of a local hero, pulled some strings to access the 100 pound grant, and later paid for the balance of the build himself.

Down by the Liffey Gallery is run by a local foundation and they moved in in 2011, upon the little building's centenary. Lincoln artists and volunteers keep the popular gallery running as well as looking after the building on behalf of Council.

NZPlaces would love an image of this cool little gallery if you are passing by.
