Whakapapa Visitor Centre and village

This is a Department of ConservationVisitor Centre featuring excellent models and displays. The Centre is in the Whakapapa village in the Tongariro National Park on the lower slopes of Mount Ruapehu. SH48 continues up the Mountain to the Iwikau Village also known as the Top of the Bruce. Here where the skiers chair lifts begin is a collection of ski-club chalets occupied during the ski season. (From late June to mid-November). Whakapapa village itself offers a few places to stay including the Grand Château.
