The rocky, volcanic landscape of Tongariro National Park provided the perfect setting.
The heroes struggle across desert plateau and lava flows in the land of the evil Sauron. Filming took place on the Whakapapa Skifield and on a volcanic plain along the Desert Road - a Ministry of Defence training ground.
To get the feeling of being in Mordor, you can do one of the numerous walks in the Park (get a brochure from DOC Visitors' Centre) and experience an ever-changing landscape formed by eruptions of lava, ash and mud flows.
