Takapu Refuge Walk - Gannet Colony

Otakamiro Point is the site of one of this country's few mainland Gannet breeding colonies. From the car park at Maori Bay the track leads north out to Otakamiro Point where there are platforms and interpretative panels. Descend down to Murawai Beach and from the end of Motutara Rd take the Maori Bay track back to the car park. (0.8 km - 30 mins) The Gannets provide most entertainment in December as the adults dive at speed in search of fish to feed their demanding young.
