Muriwai Beach

Rodney Community Halls

A long popular surf beach. A filming location for "Xena, Warrior Princess" and home to a colony of Australasian gannets (Takapu), Muriwai is a regional park with walks and picnic sites with electric BBQs. In summer months you can watch a surf lifesaving carnival. Throughout the year at low tide, and dependent on the direction of the fickle sea breezes, land yachts or “Blokarts” race and tack in front of the rolling breakers. You can even hire a “Blokart”

In 2013 after a long gestation period , a new surf club was opened as a centre not only for life saving but also as a community hub for more than six local organisations.

Painter Colin McCahon was inspired by Muriwai and for many years had a studio here. His output was prolific.
