1B Emerson Street, Napier South, Napier, Napier City
Behind the colonnade surround of Napier's Sound Shell is a handsome four storey commercial building representing a significant slice of Napier's Art Deco Story.
The T & G Building, now heritage listed, was bravely erected by the Australian T & G Mutual Life Insurance Society after the Napier Earthquake. They chose Wellington architects Mitchell and Mitchell for the 1936 build, who went to town with a dome, a tower and a clock, creating the most impressive facade on Marine Parade. A fabulous photo was taken inside the dome in 1988.
The building is now a hotel, named The Dome, enjoying the tourist trade associated with Napier's Art Deco heritage.
