1 Conical Hill Road, Hanmer Springs, Hurunui
This tiny alpine resort village has an elegant centrepiece of just the right proportions. Traditionally called "The Lodge" and now managed by a hotel group, the 1932 Spanish Mission building has lost none of it's charm, in fact growing more steeped in inherent elegance over the years.
Like a sight from California's northern reaches, the Spanish style, with Moorish arches, timber window shutters and a bell tower above the central courtyard, it is a building undeniably suited to an area in which it matches nothing yet complements everything.
Spared from damage in the 2016 earthquakes, the "Lodge" (Heritage) still holds centre court in Hanmer Springs.
With tourism booming, the Coastal route between Picton and Kaikoura cut off for an indefinite time due to the quakes, a mix of hope and fear, trepidation at least, pervades Hanmer, that it's perfect balance may yet spiral out of control into another Queenstown.
