1377 East Coast Road, Whakatiwai, Hauraki
Whakatiwai Regional Park is the next park south on the Firth of Thames shoreline after Waharau. There are gravel ridges here which are considered internationally significant.
It is a skinny park, with a track that goes inland and through some bush and can lead to Waharau Park to the north or deeper into the Hunua Ranges.
Nearby to the park is Kaiaua Marae, and further south, just over the Waikato border, are Kaiaua the Rangipo Pa site and Museum.
Ecologically significant is the presence of godwits, the migratory birds which directly connect us with North Korea. Another unexpected yet important connection is found here in the Ecoquest Foundation which in New Zealand is a charitable trust, but has it's home at the University of New Hampshire, USA. Their Ecology in Action programmes teach ecology, restoration ecology and resource management, environmental policy and sustainability.
