3255 State Highway 12, Taheke, Far North
The roadside store at Taheke is so 'general' and so 'Northland' our roving photographer David Harry Baldock stopped to snap it.
Not only are they retailing advocados and honey, passionfruit, pot plants, books, locally made candles and soap, there is a mural: 'Save the N8tve' on the side and the Tino Rangitiratanga flag flying high and proud.
The Taheke Tavern stands alone on the side of the main road. There are some reports it may have sprung up as early as 1840, the first official 'bush licensor' was 'Eruhiri' in 1875 and was a coaching stop in the early history of the Hokianga. As the dilapidated sign at the roadside shows what it offered before it closed.
