34 McDonnell Road, Horeke, Far North
An eco attraction for the geologically inclined.
The scientific value of the geological features of the valley and rocks that form it are unique in the world, and due to relative recent geological happenings, only 2.8 million years ago.
The beginning of the story is the eruption of a massive volcano (now Lake Omapere) possibly several times, resulting in a thick layers of rock spreading outwards. The resulting basalt rock has always been supposed to be too hard to result in the formation of volcanic 'Flutes', but in this particular valley, science has learned a lesson from the basalt flutes. They formed here when erosion washed away the surrounding clay, and the basalt boulders eventually found their way down to the valley floor.
The Swiss migrant couple who own the farm say they have learned that the unique combination of Northland's Kauri trees and the rain together eroded the basalt until it appears as it does today. They have developed walkways and viewing platforms on the farm for their visitors, who may also choose to mountain bike, kayak or stay over in the BnB or campsite.
