71 Stafford Street, Dunedin Central, Dunedin, Dunedin City
Sometimes incorrectly described as one of Dunedin's oldest houses, for no apparent reason, as it is flanked either side by older houses. This 1907 building was a 'Nurse Thompson Private Hospital', so certainly has a significant history, but the greatest asset of this Victorian Pseudo-Tudor Arts and Craft fusion would be the same now as it has always been, it's sheer size.
Designed by prominent Dunedin architect, Basil Hooper, an configured as minimalist backpackers accommodation since the 1980s, Stafford Gables can certainly pack them in, and it's proximity to the city centre is also cited as an advantage. So if you want to stay in heritage accommodation and feel the (apparently haunted) vibe, but at a backpacker level, you are in luck here. The haunting rumour dates back to the building's heritage as a hospital, and the fact that the present day television room was formerly the morgue.
