276 High Street, Dunedin Central, Dunedin, Dunedin City
The very homestead of New Zealand's largest construction dynasty, which continues to this day. This is the original home of Sir James and Lady Fletcher, who began building homes for New Zealanders in 1908, and the building has not stopped.
One of the first projects for Scottish immigrant builder James Fletcher was a classic Edwardian Villa such as can be found in most New Zealand towns, out at Portobello Road, Broad Bay. The building company went from strength to strength and after Fletcher's brothers joined him, moved into larger scale construction projects.
Being so successful, Fletcher did not want a modest timber villa for his family, he secured this large city plot and employed architect William Dunning and tasked him with designing a decorative Dutch Style home. It also has gardens.
The good news for heritage and architecture buffs, is that this grand residence is now operating as an elegant B and B with extremely good ratings, like '7 star'.
