29 The Octagon, Dunedin Central, Dunedin Central, Dunedin City

Dunedin Public Art Gallery

Founded in 1884 by William Hodgkins, father of renowned painter Frances Hodgkins, the Gallery is the oldest in the country. Thanks largely to wealthy benefactors, Dunedin’s art collection soon outgrew the Settlers’ Museum and the Logan Park Gallery.

In 1996 the former DIC Department Store building was totally redesigned to provide an exciting, modern space worthy of a significant art collection. The Gallery has an extensive New Zealand collection of New Zealand works from 1860 to the present; it includes paintings of Frances Hodgkins and Colin McCahon. The impressive foreign collection includes works by Monet, Turner, Gainsborough, Derain, Tissot, and Japanese prints.

This Gallery is very accessible in the heart of the city and is a venue for the popular Dunedin Fashion Week.
