The Scottish poet is honoured here. There are those who believe the statue should be of his nephew, the Reverend Thomas Burns, one of Dunedin’s founding fathers and the first chancellor of New Zealand’s first university. A memorial to Thomas that once graced the Octagon has long since disappeared and poetry has prevailed.
