2 Castle Street, Dunedin Central, Dunedin Central, Dunedin City
Is this building in the Queen Anne Style? John Campbell, Government Architect of the day, was clearly influenced by Norman Shaw's New Scotland Yard, creating a sublime contrast when his own courthouse was built next door.
The Prison, also a Police station at the time was constructed in 1895 from Red brick, distinctive white mouldings and wall bands as well as the cupolas and corner windows which do nod toward the Queen Anne style which Campbell followed.
Proposals are afoot to return it to its 1896 appearance.
