Hinewai Reserve

Christchurch City Walks

This 1050 hectare reserve is managed privately by botanist Hugh Wilson for the protection and restoration of native vegetation and wildlife. Conservation values come first. A visit is free but donations are welcomed. The reserve includes 20 walking tracks open to the public, including part of the Banks Peninsula Track.

Hugh Wilson's book relates how he "dreamed of restoring a patch of Banks Peninsula to its original pristine condition. Twenty-five years later his vision has almost come to fruition. From a gorse-covered block, with a small remnant of ancient bush, he and a group of enthusiastic helpers have created the Hinewai Nature Reserve, a wonderful wilderness which has become one of the treasures of Banks Peninsula."
